I just learned about this in my interior decorating class. The teacher says to put the dark wall opposite of the window. If you put it on the same side as the window it will darken the room. Also you should only use the dark color if you want to make the room visually smaller. If your room is tiny you should stick to lighter colors. If your room is huge and you want it to seem cozier than do the one dark wall.

if you're thinking about doing two-toned walls, you should put the darker color on your 'window wall'.
I recently painted my room with two different colors, and I used a deep brown on my wall with the window, because it tends to highlight the room! :)
