I'm a beginner looking to buy a digital painting software; I already own Photoshop, but I heard it's a little outdated and not specifically geared for painting. Well then, what software should I use?

Price is not a problem by the way; I'm looking for efficiency, capability, ease of use, etc.

My top recommendation is ArtRage by Ambient Design. There are numerous versions to buy, but I recommend buying ARTRAGE STUDIO PRO because it has the most features. Download the free trial of ArtRage Studio Pro Demo for 30 days at the OFFICIAL ArtRage website.

* ArtRage is easy to use. You do not have to learn complex digital tools!

* ArtRage Studio Pro has the feature REAL COLOR BLENDING on the canvas, that you can turn on or off. (Example: Lay down blue paint on the digital canvas. Lay down yellow paint on top of the blue paint, and it will blend together creating green paint).

* Includes a variety of drawing and painting mediums

* The painting mediums look like REAL PAINT. You can also apply the paint thin or thick.

* Can turn each color into a METALLIC color, resembling gold, silver, and all the other colors

* In order to learn how to use the program, you will need to read the MANUAL. Go to the drive where the program was installed (usually its the C:/ drive and the main folder is called AMBIENT DESIGN). Open the Ambient Design folder and click on the folder called RESOURCES (or it could be in the folder called MANUALS). Open the file called ARTRAGE 3 MANUAL. Be sure not to delete any of the files located in the Ambient Design/ArtRage folder because these are the files that were downloaded on your computer to activate the program!

Here is a list of other digital art software programs that are used for drawing and painting on the computer. Some of these programs are 100% Free while others offer a Free Trial to see if you like it before buying it. Some of these programs are easy to learn while others are more complex.

Honestly, it all depends on what look/feel/results you're looking for. If you're looking for a digital way to show traditional like mediums, you could always look toward Artrage http://www.artrage.com/ They even have an app for the iphone.

PS has always been my backup (I'm a big Open Canvas believer) but I know a lot of people that swear by SAI http://sai.detstwo.com/sai/ and Manga Studio.

The best advice is to try out a few trials and see for yourself which works right for you. I know millions of people who do well with a simple oekaki editor or even MS Paint whereas other people need PS or even Illustrator to work.
