I am after artist/professional quality watercolour pan set (also sometimes called watercolour palette set).

I was looking at Winsor and Newton, as an example, but they do not sell more than 24 pans per set.

A set usually is in a travel container (would prefer if it was made out of wood or metal for long term use). Can include space for other items (brushes, ink wells, etc).

I really want 32 or more half pans that fit within the set. If possible I would like a mixture of earthy tones and bright tones, not just one lot of colour - but primarily searching for the brand and starter set.

Price is not an issue for the set, but I do not wish to purchase a large number of half pans on top of the starter set.

Who/what company sells that many half pans in a box set?

Both these links take you to watercolor half pan sets. They both carry 48 color sets. One carries Sennelier, the other carries Schminke Horadam. Both are professional quality paints. They come in boxes with mixing trays in the lid. I have personally purchased from both these art houses. I have been completely satisfied with the service and the supplies I have bought. They are both staffed by artists, so questions are answered timely and by an artist.

Great answer from above. Your search is ambitious and i would not consider it a starter set. With a 32 or 48 color set you will get far more colors than you will ever use. Daniel Smith has a palette with empty pans so you can buy the colors in tubes and make your own pans, refill them as needed yourself. They also have deals on sets of tube paints with the combinations of colors you mention. Jerry's Artarama also sells a similar product as the do-it-yourself pan maker palette. I am not sure about the ink well feature. Liquid isn't compatible with a travel set. Most travel palettes will have a space for a couple of brushes and pencils.

I am an amateur water-coloristst and seldom use more than 6 colors in a painting. My studio palette has only 17 colors, 4 reds, 5 blues, 3 yellows, 3 earth colors, and 2 greens. My travel palette only 8 colors.

I could not select select 24 colors, much less 48 which I would ever need or use.

Well I would think that you price it according to what the market will bear - a lot of artists sell on ebay, try searching on there and seeing what prices pieces are fetching at auction. Compare the quality of what you see there to your own work and price accordingly. You might even want to try selling on there yourself - some seem to do well there. Good luck! Edit- not sure I agree with the person who said anything under £100 is too cheap - I have bought some nice bits of original art on ebay for less than £50, it's up to the individual artist to decide what a piece is worth. I personally couldn't afford £100 paintings right now, so I go for the cheaper work.
