Limited output, compared to Demand.

Influence, if relative. If buyers want crap, others will imitate.

Fame is in the buyers (and potential buyers) eyes. Advertising helps. If the Rich say it is what they want then instant fame.

Many People can take beauty for only so long.

Then when something ugly comes along they have to adore it as a Change. You may note the same in Music, through the last century.

Picasso just happened at the right time. After a while the Elitists were stuck with it, and could not let go. So continuing Snobbery has caused it to rise in value. All art has a value to each person in time.

I like paintings that are photographic, but an occasional ugly or distorted work makes for a change and appreciation of the great works.

He was famous because the right people were influenced by his work. He was influential because what he did opened peoples' eyes to what was possible in art (hard to see today because so much of what he inspired has become ubiquitous with visual culture). His work is expensive because its demand far outweighs its supply.

Anyone who can't see that Picasso was an incredible artist is a moron.

Just look at his amazing work and the answer will be obvious, like van Gogh, he was an artistic genius, who changed the way we see things for ever.

He found himself in the vanguard of fashionable painting trends. First, Expressionism, then, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.

Personally I find him to be an overrated hack -- but that's just MY opinion.

Politics aside, he didn't exactly "find himself " in the centre of things ; he promoted himself there. For several years during the sixties his name was the best recognized name in the world. Self-promotion!

If I said he was a Communist you would not believe me.
