Question:
Bright colors over black acrylic paint?

ok so in art class I painted my canvas with "mars black" professional quality as the background, now I need to paint colors like, orange, yellow, red, purple, green over it. Will those colors still appear bright, or will it appear duller because of the black background? And if it does make it appear duller any suggestions on how to fix it?

-Thanks!

Before you start your actual painting, you may want to put an undercoat of a light yellow or something. That way, if there is a bit of an empty space when you start your painting it'll be colour instead of plain white, or black.

If you don't want to do that, then it actually works fine if you put a few layers of the colours on it, especially if it's good quality.

Hope this helps :)

I know it is an old question, but someone else might need to know this: Different paint colors are opaque or transparent. If you want bright colors over a dark base coat, make sure you use opaque colors, or use white or an opaque light color first as a base where the colors will be, let it dry, then use the more transparent one.

absolutey a wonderful option and a great exercise in picking colour combinations and a

topic that has lots of potintial variations in size and colour strength.. such as a fall grove of trees, or

an exotic flower garden, birds, individual flowers in a bouquet, or faces, male or female.

The colors over the black will be dull or not even show up.

A rule of thumb, paint light colors first, then fill in the background if it's going to be dark. Or paint white on top of the black, then the colors you want.

It doesn't matter how thick you paint a color on top of black, it will never be as bright as if you paint on white or a lighter color. (For Acrylic, tempera, and watercolor in my experience.)

The paint will show up bright as long as the black is dry and is not a flat black but instead it is a gloss black.

A good strategy for brightening them would be to under paint your design in white, let it dry and then color over the white layer.

I would think that if it is good quality paint it shouldn't have too much of an opaque quality and therefore not show the black. If it does you could always do multiple layers of the color to brighten it up or use white paint as a "primer" where you want the colors to look more vibrant.

it depends on how thick the next layer is. If it is thin it will darken and dull your colors, while if its thick it will have nearly no effect. If it does some how make it duller, simply put another layer of the color.

Good luck!
