He was a Renaissance artist and used some of the techniques of the day oil paints on canvas and his subjects were figurative portraits and religious subjects. He didn't do a lot of paintings but they were of very high quality. His notebooks are some of his most revealing works with studies of nature including the first extensive studies of human anatomy including the organs and bones of the body. He also invented things from flying machines to war machines like tanks. Artist were often called upon by their patrons to design arms and fortifications.

Style, when speaking about art, usually refers to the artists own style of painting. Leonardo was an artist during the Italian High Renissance.
