Brown is a tertiary color which means it is made from mixing a primary color (red, yellow, blue) with a secondary color (green, orange, purple). You can make brown from mixing together blue and orange or red and green or purple and yellow. Each of the combination will give you a different type of brown. Find out how to mix colors and my easy shortcut on mixing colors to make brown in my post.
Of course BROWN is a whole range of colours, and generally using complementaries (i.e. a primary colour and a mixture of the other two primaries = all three primaries) will give a colour in the range which we give the name brown.
You can find out exactly how to mix the shade of brown you want by considering some of the methods and ideas given in this article on WikiHow ( http://www.wikihow.com/Mix-Paint-Colors-to-Make-Brown).
This is fine for most media but if you are using watercolour you will need to lighten or darken your mix by other means. In watercolour the use of white is often frowned upon and black is rarely used. In this case use more water to lighten the shade and change the ratio of the colours in your mix to darken the shade of brown.
Another source is this article on About.com (http://painting.about.com/b/2006/02/09/color-mixing-the-easiest-way-to-mix-brown.htm) which is part of a series on colour mixing.
I have written a simple introduction to the colour wheel here. (http://www.squidoo.com/the-colour-wheel) although it is mainlyabout how to select combinations of colours to best effect.

Red and Green mixed make a Brown, think of Christmas colours and you can easily remember it, add a little white to lighten it up or black to darken it down.
More Red gives a warmer tone of brown.
As you don't say what it is your painting if it is walls then Brown will make the room pretty dark.
Might be better if you contrast with lighter colours. Green always goes beautifully with oak but it needs to be an earthy green.

Green and red.
If it's that important, buy a kids' watercolour paint set and get mixing.
