You definitely will harm the sound by applying paint. Cellos and other hollow-bodied instruments are built from woods chosen because of their tonal qualities. Even a poorly applied layer of lacquer can affect the sound quality. Paint absorbs sound, basically acting like insulation, so a painted cello wouldn't have the same resonance as one that had its original finish.

Even changing the varnish can change the sound. Instead of painting the instrument how about painting the case? I know a lot of people who do that! Because painting the cello will change the sound. Our instruments are SO finicky. Moving the soundpost a millimeter will change the sound or the bridge. One tail piece versus another. Paint actually puts WEIGHT on the body of the instrument, changing the sound. That and the type of paint may eat away at the wood depending on the acidity of the paint. Also, when a luthier goes to open up your instrument if need be, he will ruin your art! Ha! But mostly its not good for the sound.

Yes - I would avoid painting your cello unless you seek professional help. The way the cello/violin creates music is very delicate and is a factor of the instrument's material and the different reverberations it creates.

There is no telling how the paint would change the surface of the violin (which may change the sound) or how it may damage the actual violin.

The surface coating of the paint might muffle the sound, etc.
