I draw anime-style pictures and I wanted to start using some watercolor pencils. I did a few quick tests last night by lightly coloring with the pencils and then using a damp brush to spread the color. Well, the colors looked great but the lead from the pencil got smeared a little as well. What can I do to prevent this, or, is there a medium that I can ink the original sketch in so the outline won't smear? Any tips are appreciated!

Use a 4 H or harder graphite pencil to draw the shapes first. A fine tip marker will also work. Faber Castil Pitt markers or Sakura Micron pens will also work and not smear.

It won't smudge, but it would look a little weird. Because watercolor paint is almost transparent, then you'll still see the pencil pretty clearly underneath. Good luck! :)

In my experience, faber-castell pens work really good. They are waterproof, fine and do not break/bleed through easily :D Micron pens work too.

Use before you do your watercolour pencils.
