The French term for still life translates as "Dead Nature." In other words, natural objects that are removed from their life-source -- fruit, flowers or dead game. But most people expand this definition to include inanimate objects -- bottles, or whatever, but (strictly speaking), never include people.

However, there is a "trick" that many traditional still life painters use to suggest that a person has recently let the arrangement. They'll show a half-peeled orange, a spilled glass of some liquid, or a still-smoking match., etc. These suggest a human presence.

Usually people aren't included in still-life paintings, but why not break the mold right? Anyway, for the most part still-lives are of non-living or items like flowers that stay still over time but as I was trained sometimes fruits and vegetables can decompose as one is painting them, and that all works into it. But usually still-lives are done indoors and in a situation that remains the same for long periods of time so the artist can really study it and get the lighting just so so. But as one must be aware, there are no set in stone rules so I'm sure you might be able to find a still-life that is done outdoors but it's just not the usual case to see that in a still-life painting

a still life is usually set up indoors, but it doesn't have to be. It is not meant to be a "natural" setting - it is definitely arranged by the artist before painting.

A still life can be any type of set model, example a floral arrangement, vase etc. Can you use a person? Yes but it would be a model and they would have to maintain their position, yes it can be indoors most still life is indoors because it's a controlled environment.

Still life is usually of an arrangement of flowers, fruit or something else inanimate. There are never people in a still life.
