I believe this is an oil on canvas painting made by Everett Shinn. That is all that I can find so far.

James: It is similar to Edgar Degas style, but I am pretty sure that it is the work of Everett Shinn's.

Shinn, of course, was deeply interested in theater and spectacles, such as the circus. This piece certainly suggests his famous painting, "The Hippodrome, London" which is in the Art Institute of Chicago and dates to about 1902. A possibly related work is the Dayton "Tightrope Walker" of a later period.

Whether this work relates to Shinn's performance scenes I can't be sure; frankly, I don't think the style is quite right, but variations can always occur.

On the Art Institute site, scroll down to "examination."

The style looks more like Edgar Degas.
