A fan brush is used for making trees especially evergreens and grasses and anything where you want fine lines off of a base of solid color, but then some people use them for putting clouds in the sky. You never use the whole brush only the corner of the brush. To make grass with a fan bursh, lay the brush on the canvas and flick up while removing the brush from the canvas.

When you choose a fan brush get a stiff one. In my opinion the soft ones are pretty useless.

Fan brushes are also occasionally known as "dusting brushes", and intended for blending sharp edges in oil painting, (as are "badger blenders") though they can be used for making fragile, wispy marks in the surface of the painting too. As with any medium or equipment though, the individual artist will find his or her own particular ways of working, and there are no rules - thankfully!
