Paul Gaugin's works belong firmly in the "Post-Impressionist" peroid. Whereas the (predominantly) French Impressionists painted with dots of colour, Gaugin completely reversed the practice and used large blocks of solid colour. His thinking was derived from the Japanese Prints that were being imported into Europe and were very popular. Gaugin also split up his area of bright colour with darker diagonals to lead the eye around the picture.
Gaugin was a contemporary of Vincent van Goch, and they worked together in Arles in 1888-9. It is debatable whether Gaugin influenced Vincent or vice-versa, but there are numerous similarities in style and technique.
in many ways Gaugin provides a link between realism, Impressionism and the cubism of Picasso.

That is an early Gauguin before his famous trips to Tahiti. It is easy to compare Gauguin with van Gogh because their time together is well documented and their relative philosophies about art are legendary. Gauguin was developing his broader , flatter areas of paint when van Gogh was trying to follow the Impressionistic styles of catching the light. Notice the much shorter brush strokes used by van Gogh.
