Almost never is canvas used "raw".....It's always coated with "gesso" to provide a good surface for painting. A canvas material acceptable for art must be very stable when stretched....And should be finely-woven enough to provide a good surface.

Linen and cotton are best. Coated with gesso of course.

You can try it, but there is no guarantee it won't smear or absorb the paint properly.
